Over the last months of 2014, we have become involved with Last Hope Animal Charity and their spay/neuter programs. They have also helped us share information on cats needing new homes. We are so impressed with their efforts to improve many animals lives, cats, dogs, rabbits and other small furry pets. We have neutered many stray and feral cats with their voucher scheme since joining them in September. We are also hoping to help them with some TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) efforts in the future.
In 2014 alone, Last Hope's voucher scheme enabled the neutering of over 1000 cats that would otherwise continue to produce more kittens and spread diseases such as FIV (feline AIDS) and FeLV (feline leukaemia virus). They also undertake extensive TNR operations. They provide this service for members of the public that are concerned about large colonies of feral cats in their locality. Once they have identified a colony of cats that need help, they work with the local community to set up feeding stations as regular times and once the cats have become used to the routine, they will then set up traps to catch all members of the colony in one go. Participating vets will then attempt to spay or neuter all cats in one day. Sometimes this cat be up to 30 cats or more! The cats are then released back to their home once recovered from surgery and members of the community undertake an agreement to feed and care for these feral cats for their lifetime.
TNR programs have been shown worldwide to be the only way to effectively control the feral cat population and improve their welfare. TNR efforts take great dedication from both the local community and from the charity organising the program.
We are proud to support Last Hope Animal Charity and hope that our friend and followers will consider these guys when considering charities to donate to. They are also a great organisation to adopt a cat from! See their website www.lasthope.ie or find them on facebook for more information.
